The gorgeous, historic Hackney Empire, beloved of legions of comics,
actors and music-hall types, is on a perennial funding crusade: almost
every month sees a benefit of some sort or other in a bid to stave off
closure. Here’s hoping it succeeds. Though it hosts more comedy and
theatre than music, the rare gigs here are invariably a treat.

Craig-Martin is a ‘self-confessed Prada whore’ who just follows fashion in order to blend in at parties. She was recently said to be lusting after a $6,000 mink sweatshirt as ‘you can throw it on with jeans’. Her day job is photographer to the rich and famous. On the positive side, she doesn’t do them any favours and she is just as likely to catch someone having a pee as posing. Expect to see celebrity body parts but few faces as Craig-Martin has a fear of being sued.

Massive buffalo herds once rolled across the heartland prairies like an endless black sea. Buffalo yielded many essentials Native American tribes needed for food, clothing and shelter. Those days are recalled in a weekly hands-on family activity programme. This permanent exhibition provides a taste of life as the Pawnee Indians lived it on the Great Plains. History comes alive in a full-size replica of a traditional Pawnee earth lodge. Join museum interpreters around the fire to examine tools and toys made from buffalo and hear stories of a hunt.

When Dario Cecchini staged a mock funeral for the Bistecca alla Fiorentina when it was banned for BSE in March, he shot to world-wide fame. His butcher’s shop in Panzano, a tiny town in Chianti, is foodie heaven. Opera or jazz blares from the CD player, the place is full of cookery books, jars of spices, strings of garlic and chillies, he holds brunch on Sunday mornings, recites Dante and sells extraordinarily good organic meat. He also prepares meat dishes from traditional recipes.

This Hirshhorn show in the museum’s ‘Directions’ series is the biggest East Coast display artist Tim Hawkinson has ever had. The exhibition will be an overview of his pieces, which range from distended human figures to minimal drawings all the way to junkyard assemblages of an otherworldly beauty. The museums striking third-floor ‘Directions’ space should provide an ideal setting for patrons to discover an artist and scavenger with a West Coast aesthetic ingrained in his creations.
